🕯️ A Lament for the .MD Time Zone

A small handful of servers is all that stands between the Republic of Moldova and total dependence on someone else's clock. And the count has been shrinking, not growing. The graph does not lie, and the graph is going the wrong way.

Reading the official chart at md.pool.ntp.org: Moldova's zone has bounced between roughly 6 and 14 active servers over 18 years, and the recent trend is downward, not up. That is a real fraction of the country's volunteer time infrastructure gone in under a year — not a one-off blip, a trend. The banner on the pool's own page says it plainly: "we need more servers in this country." That is not boilerplate. It is a quiet alarm.

Why the raw number understates the problem

Most of those eight servers are, in all likelihood, ordinary Linux boxes syncing from the public pool themselves — Stratum 2 or 3, volunteer VPS or home machines relaying time they themselves received from somewhere else, often from outside Moldova entirely. The chain of custody for "Moldova time" mostly runs back out through Europe anyway. A country pool with few servers, all several hops from a real clock, has weak resilience: if the international links have a bad day, the whole zone's accuracy degrades together — correlated, not independent. Eight servers sounds like eight points of failure protection. In practice it can behave like one.

What an additional Stratum 1 source can offer

ntp1.prichindel.com joined the zone as a Stratum 1 source — GPS+PPS hardware reference, not another relay. In a shrinking zone, that kind of addition can offer a bit more than a simple "+1" on the graph:

  • It stays accurate even when Moldova's international links have trouble — the clock is local, not borrowed.
  • It gives other MD-zone servers a local, low-latency upstream to sync from, as one option among others.
  • Genuinely independent, hardware-referenced sources appear uncommon in this zone — most servers seem to be relays of relays.
  • It is meant as a lasting addition rather than a short-lived experiment: GPS+PPS locked, boot-persistent, firewalled, monitored.

Given the declining trend, a stable, independently-run Stratum 1 source is a modest but genuine contribution to a zone that is shrinking and was already thin on independent time sources. This is one small addition, not a fix — the zone needs more of them, from more people.
